Elaboration and Inspirations

The July 2003 style was more inspired by Tim Burton and Edward Gorey. The eyes I drew always had what looked like eyeshadow all around the perimeter of the eye; it was the most obvious characteristic of Burton's style and I really wanted to incorporate it into my own style. Also, the characters were not very loose but at the same time they weren't too stiff either. They always had large eyes and very odd proportions. If you look at Monkey, you'll see how small his ears are in comparison to his head and how his head is practically the same size as his body. One thing that I feel is unique about my own style and not really taken from anyone else is the single tooth which you can see in both the 2003 and 2006 drawings.

Nowadays, I am more inspired by multiple artists than only one or two. Each of them have characteristics in their style that I sometimes try to incorporate into my own: Fumi Nakamura's (what used to be) frequent use of animals, Jason Sho Green's bold and beautiful line art, Jerome Mireault's sketchy style of drawing girls.

Currently, however, I've been strongly motivated by John Kricfalusi's style (and a few other members of the Spumco crew) more than anyone else's and the retro sounds of Space Age Pop music.

Evolution

This is one of the first drawings of Indie-Flea and Monkey Mouse. They've changed a LOT since I first drew them, in my opinion. But you can decide for yourself how much they've evolved. There will be more explanation on it in the upcoming post.

Emma!

Why did you want me to post this? It's so bad!!

Katebeans!

Kate and I went to Philly last Friday with her friends Eileen and Chelsea and I felt obliged to write a comic on our trip but it's inside jokes, mostly. One of them having to do with a guy we saw who was analyzing a piece with a man's head and woman's body, then saying "This is very interesting... Is it supposed to be a man... OR A WOMAN?" The other joke refers to a man who hit on Eileen by saying "I'd like to put a bid on that!" There, the jokes are outside now and everyone knows what they are so Kate, Eileen, Chelsea, and I have to hang out again to make new inside jokes.
